How it works

What the process looks like

1

Individual Session (45 mins)

We begin with one session for each partner, held separately. This gives both of you the space to share openly, without the dynamics of the relationship in the room. It helps me understand each person's history, emotional patterns, and what's brought you to therapy.

2

Joint Session (1 hour 15 mins)

Once you've both had your individual sessions, we meet together in a joint session. With both partners present, we'll begin making sense of your relationship dynamics together. My work with you will draw from the Gottman Method, an evidence-based approach to couples therapy grounded in relationship research.

3

Ongoing Care

As therapy progresses, occasional individual sessions may be woven in alongside joint sessions, as clinically useful. You'll always be part of deciding what this looks like going forward.

Questions before you begin

Why do we need individual sessions before joint sessions?

Starting with one individual session per partner helps me understand each of your perspectives, histories, and what you're each hoping to work on, without the relationship dynamic in the room. This grounding makes the joint sessions that follow more focused and effective.

Does couples therapy mean we'll end up staying together?

Not necessarily, and that isn't the measure of success in this work. Couples therapy is about helping you understand each other better, communicate more effectively, and make clearer, more informed decisions together, whatever those decisions turn out to be.

Do both partners need to attend every session?

Joint sessions are attended together. Individual sessions, at the start and occasionally throughout, are attended one at a time.

Is this only for married couples?

No. This is an inclusive space for all couples and relationships.

What if we're not sure couples therapy is right for us?

That's a completely normal place to start from. The initial individual sessions are a low-pressure way to begin and figure out what kind of support would help most.

Will my therapist take sides in couples therapy?

No. My role is to stay neutral and support both of you equally, not to act as a judge, decide who's right, or align with one partner over the other. The goal is to help both of you understand each other better and communicate more effectively, not to determine who's at fault.

Do we need to be having relationship problems to come to couples therapy?

Not at all. While many couples seek therapy during periods of conflict or distress, you don't have to wait until things feel bad enough. Couples therapy can also be a space to strengthen your relationship, improve communication, navigate life transitions, deepen emotional intimacy, or better understand each other.
